If handled properly, there is something magical about taking a beloved property from the past, dusting it off, and reshaping it for a new generation. The next major franchise coming back to pop culture and theaters in a bold new way are the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, so get ready.

This weekend at New York Comic Con, Saban and Lionsgate presented their upcoming adaptation of the huge 1990’s children’s franchise for the first time. To kick off the event, they released the new teaser trailer for the new movie.

The two-minute teaser shows off the grounded and modern tone that director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) has taken with the property that has everyone screaming that this is The Breakfast Club meets Chronicle. With Power Rangers’ release still over five months away, they are keeping much of the movie’s heavy visual effects shots under wraps, but the film’s darker, more serious tone is readily apparent.

The teaser focuses on the characters that make up the core of the updated Power Rangers, who are largely new faces. While we do get a quick and intriguing look at Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, the movie is light on Powers Rangers mythology. Choosing to keep Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Bill Hader as Alpha-5 hidden, as well as the gigantic mech-warriors that are the franchise’s prime selling point. Regardless, this looks like a good start for Power Rangers fans.

SABAN’S POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

Power Rangers opens on March 24th, 2017.
