Puny Gunn! Director Confirms Hulk Won’t Appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: VOL 2

Well that’s it. We can all take our ball and go home. James Gunn is raining on every Marvel fan’s parade. Actually that isn’t exactly true… The director of Guardians of the Galaxy has developed a reputation for spilling the beans on Marvel Studios’ plans and not playing the secrecy game that so many filmmakers engage in nowadays. In the past he has given fans his approach to the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2, the inclusion of Star-Lord’s father, and he even was the first to share that Marvel Studios would not be holding a panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Well, Gunn is talking again and if you like the color green, you might not like what he has to say…

Even before the Hulk was launched into an unknown horizon in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there had been rampant misguided speculation that the Green Goliath would show up in Captain America: Civil War, or would return in an unlikely Planet Hulk spin-off film, or possibly even showing up in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel in some capacity. Well, it seems that all of those rumored possibilities have been shot down at various times, with Gunn putting an end to the last one himself.

While it isn’t all that surprising that the Hulk won’t make an appearance in the movie. Many were hoping, at the least, to catch him in a cameo role confirming that he was lost in space, since Mark Ruffalo recently confirmed his absence in Captain America: Civil War. While others constructed elaborate string theories, in an attempt to uncover a secret Planet Hulk adaptation that would fit into Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2.

The biggest question left is what exactly does Gunn have cooked up for the next installment? Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the top movies of 2014 and a bonafide cultural phenomenon. However, Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate is so stacked with attention grabbing projects such as Civil WarBlack PantherCaptain Marvel, and Avengers: Infinity War, that it is easy to overlook the sequel which is set to begin shooting in a matter of months. It seems that we will again be getting an insulated story that, aside from Thanos, is very independent from the world of the Avengers. There is much more to come on the movie soon!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 flies into theaters on May 5th, 2017.
