Report: The Russo Bros to Direct ‘Avengers: Infinity War: Pt 1 & 2’ Back-to-Back

Last November we caught wind that Marvel had already targeted their next directors for the Avengers: Infinity War saga. Director Joss Whedon has been honest with his fatigue in the franchise, after creating the first blockbuster which has served as the foundation for every movie that has followed. Whedon has complained that the directing chores are too big for one person, so Marvel Studios seems to have settled on a team to take on the monumental task. According to Badass Digest (via THR), the Russo Bros have been pegged to direct the Avengers: Infinity War saga.

“The brothers will direct both parts of the studio’s Avengers: Infinity War, taking over the billion-dollar franchise from Joss Whedon, who directed the first two Avengers films. (The second one, Avengers: Age of Ultron, opens May 1.) They’ll film Infinity War in one long shoot beginning sometime in 2016.”

The Russo Bros have had a meteoric rise to one of the top spots in Hollywood. After cutting their teeth on television comedies, such as Arrested Development and Community, they were surprisingly tapped by Marvel to direct their pivotal sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Russo Bros knocked it out of the park creating, arguably, one of Marvel Studios’ top three films.

The Russo Bros begin shooting Captain America: Civil War next week and it is rumored that the movie will lay the foundation for the Infinity War saga. It is still yet to be proven how the directing team will handle directing the cosmic elements of the story. Infinity War is sure to be heavy in space travel and science fiction. The Russo Bros have proven that they can make a collapsing bureaucracy exciting in The Winter Soldier, lets see if they can handle an entire universe collapsing.

This also throws into question how directing Avengers: Infinity War will impact their new deal with Sony. Some have speculated that there is enough time for them to shoot the Ghostbusters film in between Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War, however with busy promotional and pre-production schedules it seems highly unlikely. Perhaps filming on Ghostbusters isn’t happening until 2018-19, or they will simply continue to stay on in a producing capacity.

There is no official word on who will be writing the Infinity War films, however all signs are pointing to in-house favorites Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Captain America: The Winter Soldier). This is very exciting for Marvel fans as it indicates that the cinematic universe is continuing to move full speed ahead. We will be sure to bring you the latest in Avengers news as it continues to develop.

Captain America: Civil War releases on May 6, 2016. Avengers: Infinity War: Part 1 and Part 2 are slated to be released May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019.
