Robert Downey Jr. has settled comfortably into the latest phase of his life. Most people associate him with his rockstar-style persona from the Iron Man films, which may or may not be far from the true Downey. However, many may have forgotten, or may be too young to remember, that he was once known for his incredible dramatic and emotional range. In films from Wonder Boys to his Academy Award nominated performance in Chaplin, he has shown he has dramatic chops.
Downey Jr. intends to remind us of this, in the upcoming film The Judge this fall. In the film, he plays a successful lawyer who has moved away from his Indiana upbringing, both physically and mentally. When his father, a judge, is accused of murder, he decides to represent him, which in turn, teaches him about the value of his family. A very familiar plot and it seems it has all the accessories installed to make this Academy Award bait. Check out a grounded Downey Jr. in the latest trailer:
Honestly the trailer is trying really hard to tell the audience, “this is a powerful story. You know you want to cry.” It seems like the film could be full of an annoying amount of cliches and scenes we have seen before, but who knows? That’s why you go to the movies and check it out. The movie will certainly still have it’s share of laughs, but will it be enough? The future tear-jerker boasts an accomplished cast which is undoubtedly the film’s largest strength from afar. It features Downey Jr, Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga (Up In the Air), Billy Bob Thornton (Fargo), Vincent D’Onofrio (Marvel’s Daredevil) and many others.
The Judge will open in theaters on October 10th, 2014. So what’s the judgement, are you going to give this a shot? Let us know on the comment boards, and !
