This year truly has been an embarrassment of riches for moviegoers. Aside from the mixed reviews and comment board wars, it’s hard to say that studios weren’t at least ambitious with their franchise plans. Batman and Superman appeared together for the first time on the big-screen in Dawn of Justice. We saw the Avengers fall apart in Captain America: Civil War. Now to end the year, we will be getting the first spin-off in the history of the Star Wars universe.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dramatizes the unseen story that is hinted at in the opening crawl of Star Wars: A New Hope, where “Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR.” Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) directs the spin-off and has assembled an impressive cast of both established and up and coming talent including Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Riz Ahmed, and Alan Tudyk.
The final trailer gives a sense of the film’s scope and the story. Mikkelsen’s character, Galen Erso, is revealed as a key designer in the Death Star, while also giving context to his relationship with his daughter, Jyn. The movie definitely has the feeling of The Dirty Dozen set within the Star Wars universe. After the grumblings of studio mandated changes to the movie behind-the-scenes, at least from the look at the trailer, it looks as if the movie will be another huge score for LucasFilm. Enjoy the trailer.
