The digital age has positively affected society in many ways. However, whenever there is progress, it inevitably leaves other things in the past. One element of the movie biz that’s lost some of its luster in recent years has been the movie poster.
Perhaps, the ease and availability of getting high-definition pictures and movie trailers at the click of your handheld device, has taken a bit of the shine off of hanging your favorite print on the wall. Or it could simply be that the art of the movie poster is a low priority for studios nowadays. However, there is one franchise that always been a trendsetter in the field, Lucasfilm’s Star Wars.
This morning GamesRadar released three brand-new posters in celebration of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s upcoming December release. They all feature hero shots of the new leads of the Star Wars spin-off, which might bring to mind posters of the past.
There was a high bar set for the Star Wars franchise by iconic artist Drew Struzan. He’s the artist responsible for the oil-painted look of not only Star Wars, but many of other classic 1980’s prints such as the Indiana Jones, Coming to America, and E.T. It seems that these new Rogue One posters evoke the feeling of Struzan’s older work, while also implementing still photography and framing elements from the posters that were designed for the 90’s re-release of the original trilogy.
The most eye-catching poster features both the Death Star and the crew of Rogue One within the ominous mask of Darth Vader. While another spotlights Director Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) and some of the Rebel forces. If that wasn’t enough to get you through the next three weeks, there’s also a new TV spot for the Thanksgiving weekend, with additional footage that should further your excitement. Enjoy!
