We are in the midst of a bonafide comic book movie Golden Age. When Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Suicide Squad, and Doctor Strange, is just the tip of the iceberg of superhero movies coming in one calendar year, you know it is a good time to be alive. However, there may be no bigger thrill than watching the biggest comic book icons in history, Batman and Superman, going to blows in the eagerly awaited Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s a team-up of such enormous scale, that it’s easy to forget that this will also be the first cinematic introduction of Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman has been a staple in DC Comics and the leading female superhero in comics for over 75 years. Director Zack Snyder has cast Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, in his upcoming film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. There has been a lot of speculation as to how Prince will fit into the narrative of the upcoming movie and how her introduction to the world will be handled. Because the next year her character will be the first Justice League member to spin off into her own solo movie.
There are a lot of reasons, many of them are unsavory, why it has taken so long to bring Wonder Woman’s story to the big-screen. One of the issues is that her backstory is extremely fantastical in nature and the larger-than-life elements have historically made studios reticent to support the female superhero film. According to a report from Joblo, who have been on fire as of late, we can certainly expect to see these elements and more in the solo film to be directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster), in 2017. If these rumors hold up, they are potentially spoiler-filled, so proceed accordingly…
When Does It Take Place?
The report states that while a majority of the story takes place in the modern day, there will be flashbacks to the World War I era to enrich the narrative. This should reinforce the god-like qualities of Wonder Woman by showing her near immortality and opening up endless possibilities for her past adventures. Her position in the DC film universe is likened to Marvel’s Thor, as both have god-like capabilities and don’t understand the ways of modern humans as well.
Who Are the Villains?
The report also confirmed earlier rumblings that the primary antagonists will be Ares and Circe. Ares, the God of War, is described as the “puppetmaster” of the film who will be decked out in battle-ready armor. While Joblo reports that the plans are for Circe to be heavily influenced by sorcery, much like her comic book counterpart. Which also makes sense as a logical entry point for magic to enter the DC extended universe. In addition, Joblo explains that Wonder Woman will be facing off against numerous mythological monsters and “winged creatures” in battles. This movie is shaping up to be a more epic experience than anyone may be anticipating. A blend between a superhero movie and Clash of the Titans would be something completely original. Which is exactly what the character deserves.
What is the Story?
The plot allegedly follows Wonder Woman tracking down Circe, with the help of her comic book love interest and sidekick, Steve Trevor. Chris Pine (Star Trek) will play Trevor and it would make sense that he serves as Wonder Woman’s government liaison, but there wasn’t much on his involvement beyond it happening in the modern day. However, at some point she relays her past history to him, which could possibly trigger the aforementioned flashback sequences. The main threat is Circe, who is infiltrating high levels of the government in an effort to create World War III. Why would she do that? Because she works for the God of War, Ares. Duh.
What is the Connection to ‘Batman v Superman?’
This is where things get interesting. According to the report, the modern day portion of the movie will actually take place a few months before Batman v Superman. If you are familiar with the marketing so far, you know that at one point Bruce Wayne and Diana seem awfully cozy at some type of formal event. That is because they apparently met months before, during the course of Wonder Woman.
Joblo also revealed that Batman will cameo near the end of the movie and somehow witness the power and good intentions of the Amazonian warrior. This is yet another signal that Batman is more than simply the badass of the DC cinematic universe. He will also function as the Nick Fury of the DC cinematic universe and will connect the threads between various stories, such as Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad. A shrewd move both narratively and from a business standpoint. Warner Bros is strategically reverse-engineering their DC universe and it just might work…
Wonder Woman is set for release on June 23rd, 2017.
