The Earthbound heroes of the Marvel cinematic universe have had to do a majority of the lifting in the first two phases of Marvel Studios’ existence. However, as the scale of the war between good and evil expands to intergalactic levels, the stories in space will be a huge piece of the conflict in Avengers: Infinity War. With that being said, new info on the upcoming sequel Thor: Ragnarok have picked up, as it will feature two of the strongest heroes in the entire MCU with Thor and the Hulk. It has been mostly speculation up until this point, but new rumors have surfaced that potentially explain how the Hulk will figure into Thor’s story.
We last left the Hulk drifting on a Quinjet into an unknown future at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. It wasn’t certain that he was going into space, but with the news that he would be joining Thor in Ragnarok, it simply became a matter of how they would meet on another planet. Well according to Geek.com, they just might have gotten the answers to some of those burning questions. In a recent report, they laid out what seems like is the first act or two of the movie. (SPOILERS) Here is what they had to say:
According to our sources, after Thor catches on to Hela and Loki’s (still mysterious) plot that is going down in Asgard, Hela destroys Mjolnir, and banishes Thor from Asgard. Loki and Hela’s plan involves the major arc of the Marvel Universe, and just when it looks like Thor is about to put a stop to it, he gets banished — but not to any old planet. He ends up on a gladiatorial planet where his head is shaved and he’s forced to fight for his life. Let’s call this planet Sakaar, like it was in the comic books.
Thor knows that he has to get to some MacGuffin weapon object to defeat Hela and Loki (could this be the Infinity Gauntlet that Thanos is in possession of, or maybe an assemblage of Infinity Stones?) and he has to get off the planet. Thor runs through all of his alien opponents in gladiatorial combat, even without his trademark hammer. Finally, Thor has to face the current champion of the arena, and wouldn’t you know who that ends up being? The Hulk.
We recently found out that Cate Blanchett would be joining the film in the role of Hela. Seeing her scheme with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will almost be worth the price of admission on its own. However, throwing Thor into a “Planet Hulk” scenario will be be a fresh approach and could satiate long-time comic book fans’ wishes.
In the comics, the Hulk was rocked off into space by the Avengers. He landed on the planet Sakaar and was forced into gladatorial combat with all types of alien species. In the end, he essentially became king, before returning to Earth on a literal warpath in the storyline “World War Hulk.” There are tricky rights issues which prevent Marvel from easily making a Hulk solo movie, since Universal still has partial ownership of the character’s rights. However, it is a brilliant move to fold his story into Thor’s world, while making Thor the central protagonist. Then fans will get the long awaited rematch between the two titans that begun in The Avengers and they will still be able to team up for their “intergalactic road trip.”
We have no insight into if this particular rumor is true, however the pieces all do seem to fit. What isn’t explained is how much time will be spent on Sakaar and how it will tie into the title of the movie, Ragnarok, which loosely means “the end of all things.” With an apocalyptic cloud hanging over Asguard’s collective head, there is sure a lot more info to come down the pipeline on this one.
Thor: Ragnarok opens on November 3rd, 2017.
