This past winter there was a lot of turmoil on the Sony Pictures lot. The release of the comedy The Interview caused an international incident, as allegedly North Korea had the motion picture company’s servers hacked. Suddenly all of Sony private information became available for public consumption.
One of the more salacious pieces of info for Point of Geekers at the time, was the discussions between Sony and Marvel that had been uncovered regarding the Spider-Man franchise. Marvel was trying to reach a compromise where the web crawler could be a featured character in their upcoming film, Captain America: Civil War. Since that time, it seems that the window has passed in his inclusion in the film. However, it was rumored that there would be another meeting this month that would determine the future of the character.
According to Latino-Review, they have uncovered that a tentative deal between the two studios has been reached. If this rumor holds true, fans are on the precipice of a brave new Marvel world. Allegedly events in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, will leave some of the biggest stars of the Marvel cinematic universe out of commission or worse. As a result, there will be a new cast of Avengers in Infinity Pt 1. that will include a cast of heroes that we mostly have not met yet. The Avengers: Infinity War Pt 1 could potentially sport a lineup including any of the following characters: Ant-Man, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, a few Inhumans, a few Guardians of the Galaxy, and potentially led by Black Panther or Doctor Strange. And oh yea…Spider-Man…
The strategy makes a lot of sense for Marvel Studios. Spider-Man is the most recognizable individual Marvel character…period. Many of the above mentioned characters will be household names by the movie’s 2018 release date, however it always is possible that a movie or two could flop or not connect with audiences. (Shudder at the thought.) The draw of seeing Spider-Man become an Avenger, would be on par with seeing Steve Rogers punch Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man helmet straight off his head. It would be a must-see event.
This also would be a huge benefit to Sony as well. We reported a couple of month’s ago how the Russo brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) had offered to produce Spider-Man’s solo movies for Sony. At the time it seemed a little odd, however with today’s possible revelation, it makes the pieces fit together. In addition from getting the free publicity and goodwill from allowing Spider-Man to swing around the M.C.U., they would be gaining producers with a proven track record and who know how Marvel Studios operates. Sony’s Spider-Man films would suddenly feel more like a Marvel film…and that’s what it should be. Because Spider-Man quite simply is Marvel.
This is a huge rumor and if it holds true, its potential ramifications are groundbreaking. What team members do see making up the lineup in The Avengers: Infinity War? Let us know on the comment boards, , , and !
The Avengers: Infinity War will be released May 4th, 2018.
