Next month fans of Marvel will get to see the brand new incarnation of the company’s most popular character in Captain America: Civil War. The early word is that actor Tom Holland (The Impossible) effortlessly owns the role of Spider-Man, which has increased anticipation for his first solo film for Sony Pictures. The upcoming movie is set for release next year and director Jon Watts (Cop Car) will begin filming the upcoming reboot in a few short months. While Marisa Tomei has been attached to the role of Aunt May for some time, little is known about the Spidey’s next adventure. It seems that Marvel and Sony Pictures have big plans for the future of the character and a new piece of the puzzle may have been uncovered recently.
Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable figures in all of pop culture, so Marvel and Sony have an interesting challenge in differentiating their property from what came before. With the solo movie coming next year a report has generated from BMD from CinemaCon in Las Vegas, about a character who may make an appearance in the new film. Here is the scoop according to Devin Faraci:
“The Vulture will be in this movie. Will he be the main baddie? Will he be a villain Spidey has to defeat in an opening scene? I don’t know, although old rumors that passed by my ears indicated a non-main villain role for the old bird.”
Peter Parker is going back to high school in the new film series and having a teenage hero will add a brand new dynamic to the superhero. It doesn’t sound as if the Vulture will play a major role from the report. However, having a 15-year old Peter Parker going up against an elderly, yet capable Adrian Toomes, will be something the franchise hasn’t seen before.
It will be an extra treat to see how Marvel plans to adapt both brand new villains and characters that were in previous Spider-Man movies, for their own cinematic universe. So while it will be fun to see a brand new Spidey villain brought to life in the Vulture. It’s equally exciting to find out who Marvel and Sony have lined up as the major villain for the film as well.
In the report, Faraci also confirms that the movie’s working title is indeed Spider-Man: Homecoming, which may allude to the film’s high school setting, as well as the character being finally produced by Marvel. (A working title is simply what a movie is called during pre-production.) Whether or not the title sticks is yet to be seen and should be revealed shortly. More details are expected to be uncovered during the course of CinemaCon and over the course of the next few weeks, so make sure to check back for the latest.
Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6th, 2016. The Spider-Man reboot will be released on July 27, 2017.
