Director Zack Snyder and writer Chris Terrio have decided on introducing a unique dynamic to their upcoming blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While Superman is young and new to superheroism, Batman as played by Ben Affleck, will be in his forties and an elder statesmen of crime-fighting. Dare I say, he will be slightly over the hill.
Now we understand why we have “Sad Batman.”
It is also known that while release dates haven’t been announced, that there will be an upcoming slate of Batman solo films. It is clear that they are building the world of Batman over a course of a few different movies including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad a few months later, with the introduction of some of his greatest adversaries including, the Joker, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot.
Since we are getting an older Batman, we don’t know the exact state of Gotham City until these world-building facts are revealed during the course of Dawn of Justice. According to a rumor reported by BadassDigest, not all of Batman’s supporting cast will have lived long enough to see the alien from Krypton.
Okay, for the curious: in this continuity James Gordon has, at some point in the past, bitten the dust. How and at whose hands I cannot tell you – all that’s noted in the script is that there’s a memorial plaque to James Gordon. This explains why the role wasn’t cast for the film, at least.
What does a dead Jim Gordon mean for BvS? Not much technically – most of the story takes place in Metropolis although there are two major fight scenes in Gotham (one where Superman comes looking for Batman and a climactic fight scene) – but it could have big consequences for the new DC Movieverse. While pre-Terrio drafts of the script mentioned a deceased Robin, later iterations closer to the start of shooting don’t – perhaps in this continuity The Joker killed Jim Gordon instead of Robin? That would be an interesting spin, and something that could feed into future Batman movies.
It makes sense that Gordon would have died at some point during his battles in Gotham. He is only human. Particularly if you factor in his advanced age in comparison to Batman. This would clearly elevate the status of Alfred in Bruce Wayne’s life, since this would be his one remaining father figure.
If they choose to go the prequel route in the Batman solo films, even if just 5-10 years, it will add to the tension of the films to know that some characters will not make it. It would also be the inverse of watching Gotham on TV, where you will be watching to see the end of a few storylines. This honestly seems the most likely approach to the solo franchise. Throw in a pre-Suicide Squad Joker and Harley Quinn and there is the beginnings of an awesome story.
