Marvel is definitely known for having a humorous tone in their superhero films, with Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man and Thor, having the strongest comedic bent. With Thor: The Dark World, some fans may have felt that the God of Thunder’s sequel was leaning towards comedy a bit too strongly, as that film wasn’t as well received as most of their other movies. It certainly doesn’t change the fact that Thor’s third outing, Thor: Ragnarok, is quickly coming down the pipeline. Despite the humor of the past, the buzz surrounding this project indicates that this might be Marvel’s darkest script yet.
It was recently uncovered that the Hulk will play a role in this story, as well as the recent BMD report that Valkyrie could be involved in the plot as well. This week we were hit with yet another fascinating bit of news, a rumor albeit, but still very interesting nonetheless. According to reports, the 2017 release will be attempting to introduce a major female villain for the story, which would be a first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is what Lainey had to say:
“If Valkyrie is really coming to the big screen, that will make two high-profile female roles being cast in Ragnarok, because I have heard that Marvel is also planning on bringing their first major female villain into their cinematic universe.”
If this news is true, this opens up three likely possibilities: Amora the Enchantress, Hela, or Queen of the Dead. But sadly, it looks like the source has no real confirmation on which female villain will be appearing, so we’re left to play the guessing game. You might recall a few years ago that word was going around that Enchantress would appear in Thor: The Dark World, of course leaving everyone to pine over Charlize Theron playing the role. Alas, that never happened, and while Theron is definitely a big name that would be a fantastic addition to the series, there is also word that Marvel is looking to cast an actress of her caliber. Lainey Gossip makes this claim and also goes on to name drop actress Cate Blanchett as a possibility for the role.
Bringing a major female villain into the Marvel universe is a great move and necessary change of pace, and if this is as dark as some claim it to be, this could turn out to be the best Thor movie out of the three. Taika Waititi, known for comedy, has been hired to direct the film seemingly to balance out the heavy material in the script. There is a lot of rumblings coming out of the Thor camp and we will be here to bring you the latest developments.
Thor: Ragnarok, being written by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle and directed by Taika Waititi, is scheduled to hit theaters on November 3, 2017.
