Rumor: Wonder Woman Solo Film to Be Set in the 1920’s

When Warner Bros. announced they would be released the first theatrical adaptation of Wonder Woman in 2017, fans of the character everywhere stood up and cheered. Now that the dust has settled from all the commotion, details are starting come to light.

There have been Wonder Woman scripts floating around Hollywood for years. Everyone from Max Landis (Chronicle) to director Joss Whedon (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), have taken a crack at writing scripts and pitching them to studios. The world’s most famous female superhero has endured in pop culture for over 70 years, but has never gotten her crack at big-screen glory. Well, she is poised to go to an even higher level after her introduction in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, played by Gal Gadot.

Bleeding Cool has uncovered a potentially huge rumor that can give insight into the tone of the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. Most had assumed that all of WB’s announced DC films would be set around the same time as each other. It looks like Wonder Woman’s first solo film will be a prequel and set a long time ago. Bleeding Cool explains:

I have been informed by those who have seen the greenlit treatment that the film will spends the first half on Paradise Island with warring Amazon factions vying for control.

An arrival of a man on the island changes that status quo, as he asks the Amazons for help. Not necessarily Steve Trevor either…

Because when Wonder Woman joins him on his return to the world of Man, we all discover that it is the 1920s. And the film will then show Diana exploring that world – a world where women have only just got the vote – from her… unique perspective.

A planned sequel would then take place during World War II in the thirties and forties. This of course was the period that the seventies TV show began in, before shifting to the then-modern day.

Movies such as Captain America: The First Avenger and X-Men: Days of Future Past, have shown that setting superheros in different time periods is a potent mix. It can mask the more outlandish costuming choices and leaves the opportunity to rewrite history using familiar characters. It seems that may be the approach that Warner Bros. is looking to take. It will add more layers of social commentary to have Wonder Woman set in a time when gender inequality was even more obnoxiously imbalanced.

Since Wonder Woman, aka Diana Prince, has lived for decades or centuries, depending on the continuity. She most likely has come into contact, either directly or indirectly, with mysterious forces that would resurface a hundred years later for the Justice League to combat. Maybe Darkseid or Brainiac has already visited Earth and she knows the location of their possessions or artifacts. It would serve to broaden the universe and make some of the more fantastic space elements mesh in a more logical manner. Not to mention, Wonder Woman looks to be released only a few mere months from the Justice League film.

This is exciting news for fans of DC Comics. Who do you think her main adversaries will be on Paradise Island and in the US? If this rumor holds up, the selection of director will help greatly to understand the tone. What do you think of the news? Let us know on the comment boards,  and !
