Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow Will Return for ‘Captain America: Civil War’

In the past few years Marvel Studios has marketed their movies masterfully. They have found the perfect balance of accessibility to their future projects by providing footage and concept art, while keeping crucial plot twists and characters under wraps until fans and the press are in their seats. There has been a lot of speculation about the fate of Marvel’s characters as the studio transitions into its third phase of filmmaking. One character whose future is uncertain is Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.

Last year director Joss Whedon made a point to emphasize how important Black Widow was to the plot of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Many speculated that she would be used as a catalyst for the team, much like Agent Coulson’s death was in The Avengers. Add to the fact that in the latest trailer there are a couple of horrifying images of Black Widow being experimented on and the red flags were raised.

Well it looks like directors Anthony and Joe Russo will not being changing the great chemistry and teamwork that made the last movie a hit, with the heroic trio of the Captain, Black Widow, and Falcon. In a recent interview with the Chinese media, the directors spilled the beans on Black Widow’s involvement in Captain America: Civil War.

“We’ve been preparing for the movie since the last one debuted last year. So, we’ve been working on it for a long time now. We’re very happy how it’s coming along. Captain America 3 is gonna be called Captain America: Civil War and it’s going to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson will be back, Winter Soldier [Sebastian Stan] will be back, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will also be joining us in the next film…The new element in this film is that Captain America and Iron Man get into a fight with each other.”

Fans of Black Widow can exhale. Apparently the super-spy and assassin will make it through 2015…at least. The cast of Civil War is huge and it is turning out to be another Avengers movie under a different title. It is probably safe to assume that Black Widow would align herself with Steve Rodgers in the upcoming conflict, whom she had bonded with in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Additionally in the comics, she has a lot of connections to the Winter Soldier himself which could serve to beef up the drama in the next film. If explored, these possible professional or romantic connections with the Winter Soldier would certainly make her an enemy of Tony Stark, if they choose to go in that direction.
