Since it was announced that Sony and Marvel had come to an agreement to share the character of Spider-Man, most of the focus understandably centered on how it would impact the Marvel cinematic universe. Not much attention or speculation focused on how Sony’s solo franchise would be affected since there weren’t many details available. Many thought that since Sony claimed to hold creative control over the property, that Marvel’s involvement would be limited. It seems that is definitely not the case.
Today LR revealed specifics about the future of Spider-Man over on the Sony lot, that are more ambitious than anyone had been previously thinking.
Kevin Feige and the Marvel team will be producing the new series at Sony in what is envisioned as a three part series to come out over consecutive summers. There is talk about calling the series SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN after yet another Marvel comics series ala the last films being called “Amazing.”
Feige was allowed to join the process only after Ike Perlmutter, Feige’s boss and the man behind the curtain, insisted that former partner and one time friend Avi Arad be removed from the film series.
It sounds like Marvel had no intention of partnering with Sony unless they were given actual creative control, despite what it might say on paper. By marginalizing the previous producers and installing their own people, the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) are assuredly part of the braintrust, they are in fact dictating the future of the web-slinger.
It was also mentioned in the intentionally vague press release, that Sony’s solo Spider-Man franchise would also feature cameos from the M.C.U. Most people assumed that meant smaller characters such as Agent Coulson would be making the jump, however, Marvel’s schemes are much grander.
Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) was the original showrunner for Marvel’s Daredevil, but decided to leave to focus on creating the Sinister Six movie. The good friend and long-time collaborator with Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron) has never directed a film of this scope before, so it unseen if he is up to the task. However, he has been a favorite of Sony and worked with Marvel, as previously mentioned, so it seems like a good compromise.
The plans for Goddard’s Sinister Six movie have been scrapped, however the first movie may still involve the formation of the Six. They will then spin off the villains into individual Spider-Man movies. Clearly Sony has been watching Warner Bros’ strategy with their DC Comics’ films and more specifically how they are using Suicide Squad to help build their film universe.
The most shocking and sensational news (excuse the pun…I couldn’t help myself), is that Iron Man may be a supporting character. LR claims that in the first new movie, it “will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the ‘audition’ to join the Avengers.” Fans of the comic books ears should perk up, as that sounds very similar to the storyline where Tony Stark gives Spider-Man a new costume and he becomes the Iron Spider. Adding Robert Downey Jr. to the movie should practically guarantee a billion dollar box-office return. However, it is finally an opportune time to wonder if Marvel will be over-saturating their own market with too much Downey Jr. This means that we will be seeing Iron Man in a movie every year until at least 2018, depending on if he will be making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War Pt 1. Will fans be tired of the Stark routine by then? We will see…
In regards to Peter Parker, casting for the role has not officially begun and LR has heard that they are looking to cast a complete unknown, so Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) among others are not likely. They are looking for someone who can convincingly play a high schooler for the next few years. Much like the Harry Potter movies, Sony is hoping that this is the first of a series of trilogies where you will see Spider-Man grow into a real man.
So how excited are you for the Spectacular Spider-Man? Do you think adding Iron Man is a good move or “cheating?” Let us know on , , !
