Other than Jobs, there might not be a movie in development that has had more ups and downs than the Star Trek franchise over the past few years.
The first big blow was that director J.J. Abrams left after getting the opportunity of a lifetime to guide the Star Wars franchise. He stayed on in a producing capacity, however it left a huge void behind the camera. Roberto Orci, the co-writer of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, was chosen to write and direct the third installment despite not having any comparable directing experience. He recently was asked to step down and the search for a new director began.
Paramount Pictures has finally chosen a direction for the Star Trek franchise by selecting Justin Lin (Fast and Furious 6) to helm the third adventure of the modern U.S.S. Enterprise. The studio also gave a release date of July 8th, 2016, which will be the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary.
Choosing Lin seems to be a bit of a safe choice. Lin is responsible for reinvigorating the Fast and Furious, by changing the genre from a simple drag racing franchise, to an all out heist and action movie franchise. Surely Paramount is hoping that he can inject the same amount of freshness into Star Trek. He will begin work after finishing his obligation to direct the first two episodes of the second season of True Detective. That is an extremely heavy, character-driven show that will hopefully inspire Lin to bring a similar attention to story details while he is filming aboard the Enterprise.
There is less than two years left until the release date and it appears that they must be simply revising the story that Orci had previously written. In order to make a release date that soon, they will need to begin constructing sets and working on the visual effects sequences. There is a lot going against this movie, but as a fan of sci-fi, you always want Star Trek to be quality. We will be sure to bring you the latest as the film is cast and develops.
