‘Star Wars Rebels’ Review—Episode 12, “Rebel Resolve”

With Kanan captured by Grand Moff Tarkin and the Inquisitor, the rest of the crew scrambles to find Kanan and to rescue him from the Empire.

Unfortunately, this the penultimate episode of the season slows the plot movement down to a crawl as the  crew of the Ghost gets desperate in their attempt to discover Kanan’s location and simultaneously cause the Empire a little pain. We are, however, treated to a rare glimpse of the mysterious Fulcrum, and, boy, does his/her hood make me think “Jedi.” Could Fulcrum, the de facto director of the Rebel Alliance, be Obi Wan Kenobi operating from the Jundland Wastes? Or is he/she Mon Mothma in a hood? Maybe Jar Jar Binks? Kidding, kidding. Realistically, Fulcrum could be anyone, old friend (or foe) or new, but that mystery is one that I can’t wait to see unravel.

This episode provides a truckload of evidence for Hera’s complete badassery (as if we needed anymore at this point) as she flies like an absolute genius, weaving in and out of Imperial entanglements without breaking a sweat. Might she be too good a pilot though? Might the show be better served by putting a bit more suspense into space dogfights? I haven’t decided yet. But the choreography is a pleasure to behold. I am waiting to hear Hera command Sabine to angle the deflector shields, though. My life won’t be complete until that happens.

Ezra and Hera have a nice moment together as she firmly establishes herself as basically the coolest aunt in the universe. Communicative, hardcore, wise, and philosophical, this truly is an episode that makes Hera shine a tad brighter than she already does.

Meanwhile, Kanan is tortured (how rude) by the Inquisitor and Tarkin. And that’s basically all that happens there. Pretty boring. But at least the Inquisitor finally gets to do what his title implies, even if he isn’t very good at it.

“Oh god, keep those out of my mouth.”

BUT the final scene tells us where Tarkin is taking Kanan and ohmygodIcan’twaitfornextweek! And word is the man himself, Darth Vader, is making an appearance in next week’s episode, too. Swoon.

Take a breath. Compose yourselves. We’re coming into the season finale, and it’s sure to be a doozy. Stay tuned!
