Lucasfilm is looking to create a cohesive Star Wars universe that rivals or perhaps bests DC and Marvel’s efforts. The brand that they are creating will indeed be interconnected, but not just in the movie or TV world, but across ALL entertainment mediums. The Star Wars universe is about to come back in full force, whether fans are truly ready for it or not. They are going to be telling a central story, continuing with episode 7, which J.J. Abrams is currently filming. As well as filming several spin-off movies which will serve as buffers in the years in between the primary saga.
The newest rumored candidate for a solo film is Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Star Wars insider site, Making Star Wars, has been on fire reporting upcoming news recently. This rumor should be taken with grain of salt until there is an actual confirmation, but it sounds too logical to not be true. According to the site:
“Obi-Wan Kenobi – I’ve heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.”
Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank are the next two announced directors to helm Star Wars spinoffs for Lucasfilm. While Edwards should be full-steam ahead in pre-production since most of his obligations for Godzilla are over, it would be perplexing if he didn’t already have the character he was hired to film, decided on by this point. Certainly the same can be said for Trank. It’s even harder to believe Trank would let his choice of leads get swayed by a simple poll anyhow. Especially after the heat he has taken after his decision to cast a black actor, Michael B. Jordan, as the Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm despite a huge backlash. He has shown www.order-isotretinoin.com that he will stick to his decisions in the face of fan outcries. However, he is still in the midst of post-production for that same Fantastic Four film, so perhaps things are still being scripted and worked out. It is even more likely that this could be the third spin-off property, for a yet to be named director.
Now to understand how Obi-Wan may fit into the larger Star Wars story, since he was cut down by Darth Vader in Star Wars IV: A New Hope, look no further than Ewan MacGregor. The actor is perhaps most well known for taking over the iconic role that Alec Guinness made famous and playing him in his younger years in the prequel trilogy. He is one of the few things about episodes 1-3, that doesn’t receive much criticism. Last year he not only expressed interest in a solo film, he explains how he can envision it:

Setting the story between episodes III and IV makes sense. Also it could be an opportunity to tell a smaller scale (but yet action packed) story, since it potentially would all be set on one planet, primarily Tatooine. An even bigger ace in their pocket is having a strong actor such as MacGregor already eagerly awaiting to reprise the role. Giving a new director a chance at envisioning Obi-Wan in his prime could make for an experience that would feel fresh, yet familiar. The upcoming Star Wars Rebels TV show will be set in the same time period, so it would be amazing to see if story elements overlapped. The potential to leave Easter eggs and clues that will lead to the modern Star Wars saga would be a great selling point as well. It seems logical, hopefully it is true.
