Since its inception, CW’s Legends of Tomorrow was intended to be a DC comic book fan’s dream come true. Yes the TV series is centered around a group of little known supporting characters. Producer Marc Guggenheim recently revealed that Stephen Amell would be returning to the show as Arrow, after his character made his first appearance in the premiere episode. However, the next time Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) aka The Atom, meets up with Arrow he will look considerably different.

At its core Legends of Tomorrow is a time travel show, with the band visiting different time periods to end Vandal Savage’s reign of terror. According to Guggenheim, in an episode later this season the Legends will be visiting the year 2046, where they will be meeting two more well known DC Comics’ icons.

“We’re not only introducing our version of Connor Hawke to our universe, we’re going to meet the 2046 version of Oliver Queen, and Stephen Amell is going to be reprising his role from Arrow. As an added bonus to comic-book fans, Oliver is missing his left arm and will be sporting a goatee, in a nod to the character’s appearance in the seminal Dark Knight Returns. We think this episode features some of the coolest things we’ve ever done.”

In Arrow, there is a subplot where Oliver Queen has a son who he hasn’t connected with. While it hasn’t been determined if it’s indeed Connor Hawke from the comics, it is fun to see the creators honoring comic canon in Legends of Tomorrow. However, the fact that they are even giving a glimpse at Green Arrow’s future from Frank Miller’s classic “Dark Knight Returns,” shows the type of fun that can be had on the show.

Fans have been wondering for four seasons if Arrow would sport his trademark goatee. No was was expecting to seeing Queen with only one arm as a senior citizen badass. It should be a fun change of pace for Amell, as well as for the the makeup crew. The DC movie and TV universes are not connected, so even though director Zack Snyder is also borrowing elements from “Dark Knight Returns”  for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. There is no announced Green Arrow character in the movie universe, so it shows the potential of having another DC Comics’ sandbox for the characters to play in. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait very long before seeing Queen in all of his elderly glory. Amell is slated to appear in episode 106, in about a month.

Legends of Tomorrow airs on Thursday nights on the CW.
