Steven DeKnight Talks Daredevil’s Red Costume and New Motion Poster featuring Avengers Tower

Judging by the early footage of Daredevil, it looks to be Marvel’s first full exploration of the real world repercussions of crime-fighting. The early response to the show has been largely positive, while most of the complaints have revolved around how dark, literally, the show appears to be. Except for a few select daytime shots, it seems that everything is happening in the shadows. The dichotomy between light and dark, are thematic elements that the creators are expressing in the narrative and visually. Plus the blind vigilante, Daredevil, lives in a world of darkness, so it works on many levels.

Speaking of darkness… Daredevil has only been seen in his black ninja styled outfit so far. While the black suit is canon and ultimately a bad-ass look, fans have still been patiently waiting for the more traditional red outfit that the character is known for. And according to previous unconfirmed descriptions, another costume that has not appeared in any stills or trailers does in fact exist. Showrunner Steven DeKnight talks about the evolution of Daredevil’s costume.

He always wore a black mask that was tied in the back. We went through a lot of different versions and did a lot of R&D before settling on something. If you watch very closely, you’ll see the outfit evolve subtly into what we call the black ninja suit. The mask changes. He starts wearing protective pads. Eventually it morphs into the classic suit, because he wouldn’t be Daredevil without it. Getting there is part of the fun. The idea was to back the story up to the point before Matt is Daredevil. Then we could take him to a place where some version of the red suit works in a grounded world. The solution is very exciting and makes complete sense.

This slow evolution of the suit sounds inspired. We have seen variations of this in movies, such as Batman Begins. Where we see Bruce Wayne search for materials from all around the world to construct his suit. However, this is the first time in comic book history that an entire season is being released simultaneously. So essentially viewers are getting a 13 hour movie, which will give more than enough room for proper character and costume development.
