The road to a legitimate Luke Cage series has been a long one, however now that the show is in production, it may be coming earlier than most expected. We have exactly one week until the premiere of the second season of Daredevil and the scope of the MCU will grow even further. Other heroes will soon be following with shows of their own and the next on the docket is Luke Cage.
The upcoming series will follow Jessica Jones, as the third solo show set within the Marvel cinematic universe. Cheo Hodari Coker (Ray Donovan) was tapped as the showrunner and his involvement signals that we will get a series full of subtext and topical themes. Mike Colter returns as Luke Cage and is surrounded by a capable supporting cast including, Alfre Woodard/Mariah Dillard, Simone Missick/Misty Knight, Mahershala Ali/Cottonmouth, and Theo Rossi as Shades. It seems that all the pieces are in place for a show with a perspective unlike anything Marvel has attempted previously.
At the recent NYC premiere of the second season of Daredevil, Colter emphatically announced when the Luke Cage series would have its own debut. He explained, “Daredevil premieres on March 18, and I will see the fans on September 30.” This leaves a six month gap for fans to digest not only the Punisher action, but also the events and ramifications of what will happen in May on the big-screen, in Captain America: Civil War. This also should clear the runway for the next show, whether that is a second season of Jessica Jones, season 3 of Daredevil, or the debut of Iron Fist, sometime in early 2017. It looks like 2016 is shaping up to be another banner year for the MCU.
Luke Cage premieres on Netflix on September 30th, 2016.
