The Alien franchise has had a strong presence in the movie business for over 35 years and it looks like it may go to even higher heights in 2017.
The original creator Ridley Scott, came back in 2012 with Prometheus, the prequel to the Alien series, to a mixed reaction. However, that didn’t stop the movie from posting a huge $51 million dollar opening, proving that the franchise still had a lot of life left in it. The film took place years before the events of Alien and only loosely connected the films, which irked many viewers.
However, the upcoming sequel to Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, looks to be the prequel that everyone is waiting for. As it continues the story of remaining members of the first film, including Michael Fassbender who played the android, David. While there have been hints and glimpses of the new film, today we get our most in-depth look at the creatures of Alien: Covenant.
These should look familiar to anyone that’s seen an Alien movie. The Ovomorphs are what incubates the facehuggers before they hatch and look for a host to impregnate with Xenomorphs.
While Xenomorphs are the black, insect-like creatures that are iconic part of the Alien franchise. These new incarnations are known as Neomorphs. If you notice they have a pale, white complexion that brings to mind the Engineers and the mother of the aliens, Deacon, from Prometheus.
This is one of the most iconic images from the entire franchise. The mystery of the space jockey was (kind of) revealed in Prometheus. It’s essentially the pilot’s chair for the spaceship. It’s not clear if this is the original, or another ship that is being explored in the film.
The Facehuggers are one of the creepiest creations in horror history. Once they hatch from their Ovomorph egg, they scramble to find a host’s face to attach to. They then lay the egg inside of their victim, that once grown, will burst from the chest of the host. This new incarnation looks oddly pornographic, however if this is your view of the new Facehugger…it will be one of your last days alive. So the weird design will probably be the last thing on your mind.
Here are more images of seemingly different Neomorphs at various stages. It’s unclear how many aliens will be at the center of the sequel. Regardless, their design is much more grotesque than the original H.R. Giger designs, that became legendary film creations.
There is much more to come with Alien: Covenant. However, this is another cool glimpse behind-the-scenes before we get our first look at a teaser trailer.
Official Synopsis:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Alien: Covenant is scheduled for a October 6, 2017 release.
