Take a Trip Back to the Park. The ‘Jurassic World’ Trailer Arrives!

When thinking of iconic moments in action film history, a few shots come to mind immediately. The Imperial Star Destroyer spaceship filling the frame in Star Wars: A New Hope. The eighteen wheeler in The Dark Knight going head over heels. Indiana Jones running from the boulder. And the T-Rex foot smashing down next to the car in Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park hit theaters in 1993, accomplishing a variety of technical achievements and smashing box-office records. Steven Spielberg adapted the movie from the book written by Michael Crichton and set out to redefine the summer movie once again. He was largely successful by mixing genres and casting a little outside of the box. The actors made the film even more memorable with clever improvisations, such as Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr. Ian Malcolm stammering, “Must…Go…Faster…” Not to mention, Jurassic Park also added the velociraptor to pop culture. And honestly, what is cooler than that?

The subsequent sequels never lived up to the high standard of the original and consequently devalued the brand some. So the latest effort has some dinosaur-sized footprints to fill. Jurassic World is directed by newcomer Colin Trevorrow and they managed to strike while the fire was hot by casting Guardian of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt. It seems that they took heed of the charismatic and comedic casting of the first film and choose a lead who can embody all of those elements. Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Marvel’s Daredevil) also round out the cast. Having such capable actors will hopefully ground the action when the genetically created mayhem begins. Check out the trailer.

The first question that springs to mind is why you would ever send anyone that you care about to that park? It doesn’t have the best track record… Additionally it does feel like the creators are cheating by including a plot device that enables them to create dinosaurs. Part of the intrigue of the first three films was to see all of these dinosaurs come to life, that you had only previously seen in pictures, animation, and in museums. If they genetically engineer the creatures, are they still dinosaurs…or simply monsters?

It is clear that the visual effects are far from done, particularly with that shark sequence. However there is over six months til this hits theaters, so that shouldn’t be too big of a concern for fans. The premise seems to be contrived and shaky, so this movie looks to hinge on the actors’ performances and the quality of adventure that they have created. Much more to come on this film in the coming months, so get ready to hold on tight.
