The First Look at ‘Arrow’ Star Brandon Routh as Atom

Arrow has been re-imagining itself in its third season. What once began as a dark vigilante tale that was grounded in grittiness and reality, has been slowly been transforming into a show that embraces comic book elements. It began in the first season with the introduction of the super-steroid Mirakuru and Barry Allen guest starring in the second season. Once The Flash got off the ground and became a huge hit in the fall, the show had accepted its comic book roots and has been moving firmly forward.

The biggest element from the comic book that was introduced to the show this season (aside from Ras Al Ghul), is the scientist and future shrinking man, Ray Palmer. Palmer, to be later known as Atom, has been introduced on Arrow as a wealthy industrialist who has been secretly working on a crime-fighting suit, played by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns). As of now it doesn’t seem that he has the capability to change size. However he and Felicity Smoak will be visiting The Flash later in the season, in an episode titled, “All-Star Team-Up.” It is likely that the STAR labs crew and Cisco specifically, may help him with some key modifications to the suit.

It would make sense for Palmer to gain the fantastical ability to shrink on The Flash, a show where science has truly run mad. They are preparing to introduce a talking gorilla on the show, so making a shrinking man believable should be easy. Expect Palmer’s gear to be more of a combat suit, presumably with some high-tech modifications at first however. There have even been grumblings of an Atom spin-off show, which shows how invested they are in showcasing the character. The second half of Arrow and The Flash’s season just got that much more exciting…
