There aren’t many figures in sports, entertainment, politics or elsewhere that deserve to have their life examined more than Muhammad Ali. A sports figure who became a true inspirational icon for his courage, charisma, moral convictions, and leadership. In a testament to his influence, Ali’s inspirational traits are often thought of before the fact that he was the greatest boxer of all time.
Within Ali’s life, there have been endless stories to tell. Documentaries such as The Trials of Muhammad Ali, focused on his fight against the U.S. government to overturn his five-year prison sentence over being drafted into the Vietnam War. Resulting in him being stripped of his championship belts unjustly. When We Were Kings recounted the Rumble in the Jungle, where Ali had one of his most epic fights, against George Foreman. (Yes it’s the same guy from the grills.)
In the upcoming I Am Ali, director Clare Lewins was granted unprecedented access to Ali’s personal video and audio archives. Lewins was given private phone conversations within the Ali family, which Lewins uses to paint a portrait of his private and family life. Ali has been married four times and has nine children, so there should be a lot of story to tell. Ali’s family participated in the documentary, as well as other legendary figures in boxing and elsewhere. Even though Ali’s health is failing, it is wonderful to get a piece like this so we can appreciate true heroes, while they are still with us. Enjoy the trailer:
