Marvel’s Daredevil will be the first show out of the gate for Netflix in their recent deal with the movie studio. The cast and crew of the show took the time to stop by New York Comic Con and drop some interesting bits of information. Daredevil, along with the four shows to follow, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron First, and the team-up show, The Defenders, will be connected to the larger Marvel cinematic universe but are expected to be grittier than anything they have produced previously.

The eyes of the industry have been squarely on the project to see if Marvel will take the new opportunity to adapt their tone and make these properties more adult-oriented, since Netflix doesn’t have the family guidelines of a general broadcast network, such as ABC. Marvel Head of Television Jeff Loeb explains:

“I think the reason Daredevil fits the Netflix platform is that he does go to a little bit older audience, and that’s something we were able to do on there. It’s a little bit darker. I particularly liked an issue in the 30s when Murdock is defending White Tiger in the courtroom, and to read a courtroom scene that was that exciting and such a thrill was really cool. We have some stuff coming up in the show that I think captures that.”

Daredevil has been shooting for weeks and fans have yet to catch a glimpse of what the upcoming hero looks like in costume. Well this weekend at New York Comic Con, Marvel pulled the curtain back slightly on the show, revealing info about the approach and Matt Murdock’s first iteration of the Daredevil costume.

Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) has the challenge of bringing the role of Daredevil to life. It is a role that is probably more complex than most superhero parts. Loeb had this to say about the character of Matt Murdock.

“It’s a real challenge, there are so many aspects to Matt. There’s the physicality, the blindness; we’re making a show about emotion and turmoil. We’re meeting a man who believes in law and justice by day and at night takes the law into his own hands and decides what justice is himself. He’s battling with that concept. We see a bit of Matt’s father and who he wanted Matt to be. That’s something that plays on Matt’s mind a lot as well…I should mention, we have an incredible stunt team – the stuff they do looks like CGI but it’s not!”

There is a grey area within the exploration of vigilantism inherent in the role, since being a lawyer by day and vigilante at night…is clearly a conflict in interest. Plus the character is technically blind as well. There is more going on with Murdock with his mask off, than most superheros have with them on. It should be a pleasure to watch Cox grow into the role that the producers claimed to have targeted him for years ago.

Probably the biggest movie star on-set, Rosario Dawson, had her role in the series revealed as well. She will be playing Claire Temple who seems to be an interpretation of the Night Nurse. As her name would suggest, in the comics she is who tends to the wounds of a variety of Marvel heroes. However she may be most widely known for treating Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. She also shares a romantic past with Luke Cage in the comics as well and in the clip that was shown to the Comic Con audience, she drops a hint about her past. With this in mind, it is clear how she will figure into the show and perhaps all the Marvel/Netflix shows. It is safe to assume she will provide informal counsel and a safe-haven for the heroes when they have suffered physical or emotional trauma. Loeb described Temple as the “heart of the show.” Not the place most would have expected Dawson to end up in the MCU, but Marvel clearly has a long-term plan for the character, which should be fun to see unfold.

Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.
