What was once old, is new again. That seems to be the mantra within the offices of Walt Disney Studios who have found a new niche in the market, by reinventing their own classic animated projects. They scored a huge hit earlier this year with Maleficent, which put a spin on the tale of Sleeping Beauty. They also have an adaptation of The Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and featuring, Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, and Bill Murray as Baloo, in the works as well.
Disney has enlisted the services of another Marvel Studios veteran in Kenneth Branagh (Thor) to direct their upcoming adaptation of the their classic, Cinderella. The original animated movie was released in 1950 and it was subsequently re-released numerous times over the decades. The story of the mistreated stepdaughter who endures cruelty, only to be shown her true place in the high-life by her fairy godmother has resonated with generations.
It appears that this is a more straight forward adaptation of the animated film than Maleficent was. Many of the scenes and characters look like the cartoon come to life. Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother seems like an inspired choice. Disney has also grounded their film with Cate Blanchett who can bring some more gravitas to the movie as well. Looks like a dream come true for fans of the animated classic.
Cinderella will be in a theater near you March 13, 2015.
