Sometimes a movie trailer can catch you off guard and immediately transport you to a world that you never knew existed, but you know you would like to spend two hours visiting. An impactful trailer can introduce characters, set up the rules of the movie, or give glimpses of cutting edge visual effects. Sometimes trailers are truly spectacular. Other times trailers are like Insurgent.
The first teaser trailer featured a dream sequence showcasing an immense scale for the movie. This newest trailer for the second book in the Divergent series, gives the first real glimpse at what the movie is about and it looks like a Frankenstein patch job. Without even seeing the movie, you can clearly see this movie desperately wants to be the love child of The Matrix and The Hunger Games.
Shailene Woodley returns as Tris and somehow they managed to get Kate Winslet and Octavia Spencer into the movie. Once again Jai Courtney proves that despite having zero charisma, that he will continue to latch onto franchises from The Terminator to Suicide Squad. That guy has got to have the agent of the year.
The choice of music and the overall look, honestly makes it look like a Saturday Night Live spoof. It’s been a long time since I have seen a trailer for a film that has less personality and is so overtly clichéd. It seems like the kid in high school that is trying to wear what everyone else is wearing, instead of simply being itself. You can almost see the checklist of YA elements that they were referring to while making this. This was the first time that I ever wanted to fast forward through a trailer. I mean, they are only two minutes long. Not a good sign…
Official Synopsis:

Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.
