The most eager of Marvel fans spent the weekend binge-watching their favorite street-level heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, in their first team-up mini-series, The Defenders. The show collected an impressive collection of the stars and supporting cast of the growing Netflix-Marvel universe in a battle for the city. However, one character who was glaringly missing from the action was The Punisher.
Don’t fret. Everyone’s favorite psychopath from the Marvel universe is coming back to the Netflix streaming service in his own series, after an unforgettable debut in the second season of Daredevil. Jon Bernthal returns in the role of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, a war veteran who lost his family in a violent mob hit. He borrows a page from Death Wish and takes the law into his own hands, making it his mission to eradicate crime from New York.
Netflix dropped the first teaser for the new show titled Marvel’s The Punisher, which gives viewers a small glimpse at what we can expect from the new show. The trailer features a voice over from Bernthal, as he shatters the ground, John Wick style, with a sledgehammer. Towards the end of the clip, we get flashes from the series including, looks at Bernthal during the Middle East war, ferry rides with his family, intruders in his home, mobsters on the move, and guns blazing, all staples of the Punisher story.
Castle had a huge arc in Daredevil, which delved into his shattered psyche, motivations, and his methodology. It looks as if his upcoming series will show the origins of the character both during war time and with his family, before tracking his current status as a fugitive from the law. The series also features Micro, his weaselly sidekick and “guy behind the monitor” who assists the Punisher’s missions. However, the Punisher’s world is full of grey moral ambiguity, so expect a handful of twists. Ben Barnes plays Billy Russo, who presumably will go on to become Jigsaw, the Joker to the Punisher’s Batman. However, it doesn’t seem that his adversary is glimpsed in the short teaser.
Judging from the short “Demolition” teaser, the show will be a graphic and hard-hitting take on the character. Having a 13-episode format should give the property an advantage over previous movies, that fell short of the mark and certainlyt weren’t the definitive take that this upcoming show has the opportunity to become. It looks like The Punisher will be worth the wait and fortunately for eager fans, that wait will soon be over. Enjoy the trailer:
