The success of Guardians of the Galaxy combined with the fevered anticipation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has ushered in a new era of science fiction in Hollywood. Suddenly movies that were formerly punchlines, such as Flash Gordon, are getting greenlights and being zany is actually encouraged. According to a recent report from THR, Dreamworks has beat out competing studios for the rights to the film, Alpha Squad Seven.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is adding yet another new potential film franchise to his docket. The herculean actor is reportedly in line to both star and produce the upcoming science-fiction action movie. The specifics about the film’s story are unknown, however this is what THR had to say about the project.
The plot details are being kept on the dark side of the moon but the project is described as four-quadrant action-comedy adventure set in space. Independence Day, Armageddon and Guardians of the Galaxy are some of the watchwords.
Judging from the movies that the creators of Alpha Squad Seven allegedly would like to emulate, the direction of the movie seems apparent. We can probably expect a ragtag band of space adventurers, led by Johnson, out to save the world or universe from something apocalyptic. According to the report, the pitch was so powerful that it literally sold producer Beau Flynn (San Andreas) with a single sentence. But who knows, we weren’t there… Regardless the movie is going ahead with both Flynn and Johnson’s 7 Buck Productions producing the film.
The film marketplace can always use new original properties, however based on the title and “watchwords,” it is hard to not think of this project as derivative. Taking a little bit of The Magnificent Seven, Suicide Squad, and space adventure sounds like a fun time, but we will see how the movie comes together in pre-production. Make sure to keep checking in for the latest on this project.
