TV UPDATE: STAR WARS REBELS Gets Season 3 and SUPERGIRL Gets 7 More Episodes

Fans have been treated to a gross of riches when it comes to geek programming on the television airwaves. Whether it’s The FlashJessica JonesGotham, or even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there seems to be an option for every taste. This season saw the arrival of a new live-action heroine in Supergirl, which debuted on CBS this past fall to huge ratings. Also Star Wars Rebels returned for its second season and has only continued to improve. It seems it is time to let the good times roll as both shows got their respective runs extended.

Supergirl has managed to set a tone that sets it apart from all other current superhero programs. The show is of particular importance to the CBS, since they don’t have a comparable show that can draw similar demographics. With that in mind, the network has formally extended the season for Supergirl. The show was awarded an additional seven episodes, which will bump the season total up to twenty. There have been conflicting reports over the past week regarding if there are plans to have Supergirl cross over with The Flash. It is at least within the realm of possibility now that both shows will be airing through the spring.

Meanwhile Star Wars Rebels was renewed for its third season, which is an interesting development. The first season took place five years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and since the show is officially part of Star Wars canon, the time period is of particular importance.

Next winter Lucasfilm will be releasing the first of their Star Wars spin-off films. Star Wars: Rogue One will detail the motley crew who was brought together to steal the plans to the Death Star. The same stolen plans that R2-D2 was smuggling for Princess Leia in A New Hope. So it would make sense that there could be characters, locations, or even plotpoints that could be hinted at in Star Wars Rebels’ third season. Lucasfilm’s Kiri Hart gave this statement in regards to the season renewal:

“We’re very proud of our incredibly creative Rebels team. The show continues to tell fun, heartfelt, exciting new Star Wars stories week after week, and it’s beloved by fans of all ages. Season Three will see our rebel heroes face new obstacles and find new allies in their fight against the Empire.”

The Star Wars universe will continue to grow exponentially over the next year. By next December, we will have been introduced to two films worth of new Star Wars characters. It makes sense that some of those elements will overlap, so it’s an additional reason to look forward to the further adventures of Kanaan, Ezra, and the crew aboard the Ghost.

Supergirl airs on Mondays on CBS. Star Wars Rebels airs on Wednesdays on Disney XD.
