In a recent interview with ScreenCrush, Vincent D’Onofrio (Law and Order, Men in Black) took a break from shooting the new Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil, to explain as much as he could about his character Wilson Fisk, Marvel’s choice of actors and if there will be cross over between the TV and film worlds.

When Marvel cast D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, it made so much sense it is hard to now envision anyone else getting the role. A veteran of the stage, TV and film, he is uniquely trained to handle the amount of pressure and imagination that goes into creating a character in the Marvel cinematic universe. In addition, from his 6’4″ frame to his hulking presence, he will be able to embody the Kingpin in more than spirit alone. When asked what he will bring to the role that is unique, his confidence in what the crew has come up with is palpable:

I think – it’s not just me, by the way, it’s the writer. It’s Stephen DeKnight, it’s Jeph Loeb at Marvel, it’s the scripts, and it’s me. I think it’s gonna be the … I hope — I should say – I hope it’s gonna be the new way to look at Wilson Fisk. I think that there will be no other Wilson Fisk but this one after we’re all done with it. That’s what we’re hoping for…It seems to be working really well, yeah.

Over the years Wilson Fisk hasn’t grown or gone through many lasting changes. But then again, he is a boss, he doesn’t need to change. However, an actor of D’Onofrio’s caliber will undoubtably bring new elements to character. In many cases actors are handcuffed when playing iconic roles. It would make sense that an operation as complex and interconnected as Marvel would need all actors to be as by-the-books as possible. However, D’Onofrio has actually found the opposite to be the case:

Yeah. I mean, it’s kinda cool. The thing about Marvel is that they’re not – they’re into real acting. They’re looking for artists that are willing to take chances and are willing to create characters, even if that character has been around for years and years in comic books, they still are depending on us to create something and take it somewhere else.

This quote could actually be the key to how Marvel has attracted so many talented and iconic actors to their films recently. Academy Award winning actors such as Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, Robert Redford and more have jumped on board various properties to have a bit of the fun and action. Marvel is casting each role very selectively and then giving the actors they hired the trust and latitude to truly create an original performance. They may have a recipe that will churn out iconic heroes and villains for a long time to come.

Another question on many fan’s minds is how connected these new Netflix TV shows are with the Marvel cinematic universe. There will be four individual shows featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, which will ultimately culminate in a team-up TV series called, The Defenders. All four of these heroes have powers, but they are on a smaller scale and more street-level than many of the Avengers. So far Marvel has cast top-notch actors in D’Onofrio and Rosario Dawson, in a still unspecified role, who are both big-screen veterans and could easily be at home in larger mediums. When asked if Marvel has plans to use these characters in films, D’Onofrio explains:

Well, I think they have some kind of plan. I’m not really allowed to discuss what the plan is, but they have a plan. I think the beginning of the plan is series stuff with Netflix, and then they have a bigger plan to branch out, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you specifically what that is.

If Marvel is really planning on “branching out” and using the Netflix series as a starting point, that means that they are going to be putting a ton of effort and resources into these projects. If you were upset you aren’t getting a rebooted Daredevil movie, don’t fret. We might just be getting a thirteen installment, feature film-quality story as a replacement. That is also before The Defenders season is figured in. When asked if he or any other major villains will be included in The Defenders storyline, D’Onofrio coyly responded:

 I can’t talk about anything. I can just say that they’re gonna go all the way. They’re gonna go super cool — like, super, super cool.

Super cool.

Marvel’s Daredevil stars Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rosario Dawson, Elden Hensen and Deborah Ann Woll  will be premiering on Netflix in 2015.
