There are a few times in recent movie history when a movie’s trailer is anticipated almost as much as the movie itself. In 1999, people camped outside for days just to see what George Lucas had in store for hungry Star Wars fans when the new trailer premiered for the The Phantom Menace. The Dark Knight had people coming to theaters just to hear the Joker’s voice. This year there is an unprecedented lineup of popular franchises that has the geek community salivating in anticipation and we have found out when you can get another taste to satiate your fanboy hunger.
The saga of the production of the Fantastic Four, has been almost as exciting as any movie released this year. There has been discontent in the fanboy community, as many have disagreed with the rumored direction that Fox is taking with the property. Director Josh Trank (Chronicle) has taken a lot of heat from comic purists. Many have voiced their displeasure of the film because of some of the more radical changes that were made to reflect both the Ultimates comic run and modern society at large, in regards to Trank’s colorblind casting.
Fox Studios has fanned the flames even more, by not showing any public confidence in the movie. There has not been a single publicity photo or glimpse of footage, made available to put fans at ease. Simon Kinberg, the writer of Fantastic Four and X-Men: Days of Future Past, contacted Latino Review last night and cleared the air.
“To confirm – Fantastic Four will be doing 3-4 days of additional photography with director Josh Trank and some key cast members. We are very excited about the film and can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been up to. And you will be able to do that very soon as I can confirm here that the teaser will be on Kingsman in theaters February 13.”
There you go. In less than a month’s time, fans will have something tangible to hate. Instead of hating the things that they are imagining in their minds. It is rumored that the reshoots are filming in an effort to add more action to the film, since it is reported that the movie is very character driven. Hopefully this film follows in the footsteps of World War Z and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Those are two prime examples of movies that seemed like disasters to the public, before any footage was shown. However, when people actually sat down and watched the movie, audiences were largely blown away by how entertaining they turned out to be.
On the other side of the spectrum is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Disney has handled the early marketing of the movie masterfully. They found a middle-ground between giving fans small glimpses of what’s to come and director J.J. Abrams legendary secrecy. It is hard to find someone that didn’t have a smile on their face while watching the teaser trailer this past holiday season. However, there was one glaring omission from the first look…Luke, Han-Solo and Leia. It is reported that we will be getting our first look at the original trilogy members in the next trailer, which is what many have been waiting over thirty years to see.
The word is that we will be getting the next trailer at the most opportune time…right before Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hopefully movie theaters begin getting their medical staffs together soon, because there will be a ton of geeks fainting in their seats from an overload to the senses. Seeing some of the original cast will make this new Star Wars adventure suddenly feel “real” for fans of the original trilogy. It also may clarify some of the rumors about the film that have been circulating about possible plot details. Many are guessing that the trailer may get a sneak peek debut on Star Wars Day in late April since Age of Ultron opens earlier internationally than in the U.S. Regardless, May 6th will be a day we all remember for some time to come.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1st, 2015. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18th, 2015. So how are you going to prepare for May? Let us know on the comment boards, , , and !
