Want to Know Which Avenger Will Be Returning in ‘Captain America: Civil War?’

Marvel put on a show last year when they revealed their slate of films running into 2020. The announcement was made in grand fashion at the El Capitan in Hollywood and blew away fan’s expectations for the future of the Marvel cinematic universe. The slate of movies actually provided a vague blueprint for observant and knowledgeable fans of the comics. However that same approach also has been criticized for taking away some of the potential drama within each given movie. For example, we know that Thor is safe in Avengers: Age of Ultron, because he is scheduled to headline Thor: Ragnarok two years later.

The potential outcome of Age of Ultron was slightly compromised yesterday, when THR reported that Jeremy Renner is scheduled to be suiting up to play Hawkeye again in Civil War. While there are no confirmed details on his ultimate fate in the upcoming Avengers sequel, many have speculated that he might not make it through the film intact. Mostly due to him along with Black Widow, not having their own solo franchises.

The inclusion of Hawkeye in the politically charged sequel does make narrative sense, as the lines will be further divided. It also should be mentioned that last year the Russo Bros admitted that they had written a scene featuring a chase scene with Hawkeye and Captain America in The Winter Soldier, but Renner couldn’t make the time to shoot the sequence. Renner explained to ScreenRant last year what could have been:

What it was going to be, we were trying to complicate the relationship between Cap and his S.H.I.E.L.D agent friends. If Hawkeye got a call from S.H.I.E.L.D saying Captain America is a fugitive, would he listen to that call or not listen to that call? That sequence actually was heartbreaking for us to cut it. I think it ultimately might have been a conflict with Renner’s schedule. But there was a great sequence where Hawkeye was chasing Cap through Washington D.C. there was an awesome sequence where they confronted each other in a ravine on the outskirts of D.C. and Hawkeye was shooting a series of arrows closing in on Cap, Cap closing in on him. And then Cap took him down and he realized for the first time that Hawkeye was trying to trick S.H.I.E.L.D, where he whispered something into Cap’s ear that Cap had a tracker on his suit and to punch Hawkeye to make it look real, because there was a Quinjet hovering above where they were watching the feedback back at S.H.I.E.L.D.

It appears that the Russo Bros will get their chance to either team up the two Avengers or to put them at odds. It would make sense for the very mortal Hawkeye, who has always operated within a structured organization (S.H.I.E.L.D.), to embrace regulations for the super-powered threats and heroes. It’s safe to assume that at some point he will be supporting Tony Stark’s cause, but we will see…
