2017 will undoubtedly be the year of the spider for Marvel. The company began to lay the groundwork for the glorious return of Spider-Man after an unanimously acclaimed appearance of the character in last year’s Captain America: Civil War. Now the web-swinger is anticipating an even more eventful summer as actor Tom Holland will take the center stage in the first full-fledged Spider-Man adventure in the MCU, with Spider-Man: Homecoming.
This will be the third live-action incarnation of the character on the big-screen and thanks to a crafty partnership with Sony Pictures – who hold the character’s theatrical rights – will be sharing the same universe as Captain America, the Hulk, and Iron Man. Peter Parker was formally introduced to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) last year and it appears that the mentorship that they struck will be explored further in Homecoming.
In Civil War Tony Stark built Parker an upgraded Spider-Man suit off-screen, after noting the teenager’s ingenuity and home made outfit. However, it was clear from the twinkle in Spidey’s new binocular lenses, that his new suit has a lot of upgrades with unforeseen bells and whistles. Today, Holland took to and posted a new video breaking down the upgrades hidden within his new duds for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
In the above video, we get a detailed breakdown on some of the features found in Spider-Man: Homecoming’s new battle suit. In addition to the expressive eyes, that were introduced in Civil War, we also find that there is a holographic GPS display that projects from the forearm. It would make sense that only Parker would see the H.U.D. within his mask, a la Iron Man, but it’s still unclear from the footage.
One of the most striking visual and functional changes to Spidey’s gear is the addition of web wings. The look actually hearkens back to the humble beginnings of the character and is a clever blend of old and new. It should also open up new opportunities for aerial action, particularly between Spidey and the Vulture (Michael Keaton).
The other huge improvement that Stark made to Spidey’s costume is in the web shooters. It was established that Parker already engineered his own shooters and web fluid. However, Stark is adding a laser targeting system, as well as “selectable web types.” In the comics, Spider-Man is able to use his webbing in several creative ways in addition from swinging from buildings, including heavy web projectiles, an ability to spread his webbing or concentrate it, and even making web shields. It’s unclear what uses will find their way into the movie next summer, but we are all eager to find out.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens on July 7th, 2017.
