A lot of movies are coming out this summer that are hoping to recapture their past glory. Terminator: Genisys and Mad Mad: Fury Road, are an example of a couple of films looking to re-energize their fan bases, while reintroducing themselves to the masses. No movie has more at stake this summer, than the upcoming sequel to the Jurassic Park trilogy, Jurassic World.
Jurassic World has the pressure of bringing a franchise back to prominence that hasn’t been seen or heard from in fourteen years. They brought aboard rising star Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) to star in the upcoming movie, which should be a decision that continues to payoff. However, many are curious if he will simply be bringing Star-Lord to Jurassic World, from the looks of the trailer it appears so. They also hired an upstart director that seems to have gotten everyone’s respect in Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), who has surrounded Pratt with some of the best character actors in the business. The film also includes, Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help), Vincent D’Onofrio (Marvel’s Daredevil), and Irfan Khan (The Amazing Spider-Man). Check out the dino-action!
It is a bit odd that the writers and producers had to engineer a new dinosaur straight from a slasher movie. It feels like a gimmicky plot device in the trailer. However, somebody has to open the gates and let the animals out. Presumably they didn’t want to recycle the same plot point from the original when humans were the culprit. But, that doesn’t make it any less silly…
On the positive side, the trailer has a good blend of horror, comedy, and adventure, with a similar tone to the original and a wise-cracking animal expert added to the mix. It is also apparent that many of the shots from the teaser trailer (check it out here) were far from complete. No where is this more clear than with the money shot at the end, where they added a prehistoric bird that was missing in the first trailer. With a few months to go before the release, we will see how the movie shapes up. It should be a crazy ride.
Jurassic World opens on June 12th, 2015.
