The superhero genre has officially arrived and while it may not always be the dominant ticket sales at the movies, it will always exist as a sub-genre. Just like westerns and spy movies, there will always be stories to tell. While most superhero movies are based on established comic books or graphic novels, every now and then a movie comes along that brings its own mythology and shocks audiences with its originality.
The newest superhero story is American Hero. It stars Stephen Dorff (Blade, Zolander) as a slacker who happens to have telekinetic powers. After a near-death experience, he decides to hone his powers and protect his neighborhood. From a look at the trailer, it looks like a combination of Hancock and Chronicle, due to an apathetic anti-hero and the documentary style that they shot with. The indie film looks like it full of humor and energy, along with a truly heroic message layered under all of the hijinks. It’s also proof that superhero movies are not strictly stories that have to be told by large studios.
There is a lot to be encouraged by in the trailer, particularly the energetic returns of Dorff and Eddie Griffin. Check it out!
Official Synopsis:
Melvin (Stephen Dorff), a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with the help of his best friend/definitely-not-a-sidekick, Lucille (Eddie Griffin). For a man who can do the impossible, it might be a fight even he can’t win.
American Hero opens in limited release on December 11th, 2015.
