This year has been an embarrassment of riches for comic book fans. We have already gotten an incredibly faithful adaptation of Deadpool, we watched Batman and Superman fight in Dawn of Justice, and most recently got an emotionally satisfying blockbuster in Captain America: Civil War. With all these hits it’s easy to forget that a new X-Men movie is right around the corner.
X-Men: Apocalypse comes out in a little over two weeks and the superhero renaissance continues. While the early word on the upcoming film has been mixed, what hasn’t been in question is that this looks to be the most faithful comic adaptation in the series history. We get to see the origin story of the true icons of the X-Men universe, such as Jean Grey, Storm, and Cyclops. Tye Sheridan (Mud) has taken on the role of Scott Summers, aka Cyclops. A brash teen who will one day go on to be the field leader of the X-Men and a significant piece in the mythology of the mutants. In the original X-Men, we joined the movie when the team were adults with a long, unseen backstory. Now director Bryan Singer gets to go back a write the X-Men’s history all over again.
In this latest clip, we see the first moment that Summers gets his horrifying and destructive mutant power. In the brief footage, we see a sharper characterization of Cyclops than we have seen before, which should make fans happy who were underwhelmed by the earlier incarnation. (Also look for the homage to the 80’s classic Teen Wolf.) We have a little over two weeks to go, but until then…enjoy!
Official Synopsis:
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27th, 2016.
