From the moment it was reported that the Ghostbusters would be getting a reboot, it was going to be a challenge to find the right approach. You couldn’t bring back the original cast, since Harold Ramis passed away and Bill Murray has not been a willing participant in the Ghostbusters franchise since the 80’s. However, director Paul Feig had an alternate approach that would help to differentiate the new incarnation from the old.
Feig wrote Ghostbusters with four female comedians as the leads in mind, which resulted in the casting of Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kim McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. The moment the casting was announced, the debate over the all-female approach began.
The trailer certainly has the feel of the original, with all four Ghostbusters getting clearly defined roles and specializations on the team. However, Jones’ role in the movie feels oddly stereotypical and outdated, particularly for a movie which is clearly attempting to be progressive.
From the looks of the first full-length trailer, it’s clear that this is both a sequel and reboot of the property, for a new generation. The approach seems similar to how the Star Wars and Jurassic World franchises recently restarted their engines for a new generation. However, the shots of the scientists in the library, Wiig getting slimed, and Jones alone in the subway, seem like exact replicas of scenes from the previous movies. Hopefully, these are simply homages and Feig has found a way to deftly pay respect to the past, but also a course to take the franchise into modern times.
We won’t be able to judge that until the movie is in theaters in July. Until then, take a look at the new faces of the Ghostbusters. Enjoy!
