In March we will be getting to see one of the most anticipated superhero movies of all-time with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However there may be a dark horse contender for the best comic book movie of year in the Suicide Squad, but you certainly won’t be finding too many heroes in it. While Ben Affleck’s Batman does make an appearance in the movie, this is all about the villains teaming up to cause trouble in the name of the greater good…maybe.
A few years ago, the thought of a big budget Suicide Squad movie coming to the theaters wasn’t even a consideration, for neither film studios or the average comic book fan. However, the film is shaping up to be the unexpected underdog hit of the summer. Warner Bros’ approach of dumping a cinematic universe full of heroes and villains, in Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad respectively, is looking like a good gamble and will successfully jump start the *DCEU. If and when the movie is a success, brace yourself for the imitators who will inevitably mimic the brazen approach.
The trailer looks flat out incredible. From the moment that you are introduced to David Ayer’s grounded, yet still recognizable DC characters, the personality of the film literally oozes out of the frame. The movie has a grounded tone, yet flashes of a neon visual flair that would make Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever) proud.
Even from the brief two and a half minutes of footage, it’s clear that the strength of the movie lies in the actors’ complex characterizations and performances. Will Smith seems to blend into the world much better this time around as Deadshot strikes some iconic poses. However, the trailer belongs to Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Joker (Jared Leto), just as it should.
What is seen of Leto’s performance as the Joker suddenly makes the shiny grill and ‘Damaged’ tattoos disappear. What is left is a maniacally laughing psychopath who is firing a golden machine gun. It’s clear from this trailer that the Joker is back…in a totally new, but familiar form to any comic book reader. While we also get to glimpse Harley Quinn and the Joker, seemingly in the same vat of chemicals that gave them their unique flavor. It is a very exciting time indeed. Enjoy the trailer.
