There is something primal and satisfying about a good human versus nature movie. Whether its 127 Hours, Alive, or The Edge, there is a proven track record of successful and impactful survival movies. They lend themselves to showing the full capacity of the human spirit, which is probably the reason that they connect with audiences. The upcoming movie, Everest, looks like it has the potential to leave its mark with a cast that features enough acclaimed actors to fill two movies. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Keira Knightley, and Sam Worthington as two bands of adventurers trekking up Mount Everest. They run into a cataclysmic snowstorm that leads to epic movie action and tragedy.
The film is based on the book, Into Thin Air, which documented the disastrous 1996 expedition up the mountain. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur who is best known to American audiences for his action-comedy 2 Guns. Everest looks like it has the chance to surpass its survival-horror movie predecessors with new-age, immersive visuals. There was a time when IMAX theaters were solely used for educational purposes. The natural awe combined with top-notch acting glimpsed in this first look, makes this movie one to look out for this fall. Enjoy.
