Fantasy movies have been hit or miss in recent years, as studios have tried to capitalize on the current trend of spectacle movies at the theaters. In 2012, they dipped back into the market when Universal Pictures released Snow White and the Huntsman, their adaptation of the Brother’s Grimm Snow White tale. (Not to get confused with the animated adaptation made be Disney.)
The movie was a big hit for the studio, with a $56 million dollar opening weekend, which proved that there is a hunger for classic tales on film if the right approach is taken. The movie took itself and its world seriously, while including huge elements of fantasy and mythology. Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron) is returning in next year’s sequel, The Huntsman’s Winter War, which directly follows the events of the first film. After the death of Queen Ravenna, her sister Freya finds a way to resurrect her and the two combine their magical forces to cause havoc. The Huntsman enlists the help of a warrior to once again battle the Evil Queen.
The cast for the film features some the best female actors in the business right now. Many scratched their heads when a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman was announced, since it was known that Snow White, played by Kirsten Stewart, would not return. Judging by the trailer, the future of the franchise is clearly resting in Hemsworth’s (and Charlize Theron’s) hands.
The most exciting prospect of the sequel is the upgrade in talent that was made, as Emily Blunt (Sicario) and Jessica Chastain (The Martian, Interstellar) join the battle. Blunt plays the villainous Ice Queen who seems to be enough of a threat to carry the movie herself. In fact, her ice powers definitely bring to mind another Disney animated classic as well, Frozen, which surely is not a coincidence by Universal. Theron returning for the sequel may be as important as the Huntsman. She completely stole the first movie and is following one of the best performances in an action movie this year with Mad Max: Fury Road. This cast is very promising indeed and there is plenty of cause for excitement.
Suddenly, The Huntsman’s Winter War is firmly on the radar in the competitive 2016 movie season. Enjoy the trailer!
Official Synopsis:
The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in “The Huntsman Winter’s War,” an epic action-adventure in which they are joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, as well as director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Producer Joe Roth (“Maleficent,” “Alice in Wonderland”) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale nested in the legendary saga.
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.
When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.
The Huntsman’s Winter War opens on April 22nd, 2016.
