WATCH: IN THE HEART OF THE SEA Resurfaces in the Most Epic Trailer Yet

This movie is a blast from the past! We ran the first trailer for this movie almost one year ago. At the time, In the Heart of the Sea was preparing for a March release and were we ever excited. Then Warner Bros decided to postpone the release of the film from the spring, all the way until December. It was a gigantic calculation on the studio’s part, that would seem to indicate that they possibly have an awards worthy film on their hands and they want to release it at the appropriate time to get serious critical consideration.

A lot has changed for actor Chris Hemsworth since we last reported on this film. He has starred in another blockbuster Avengers movie, had a scene-stealing performance in Vacationand is currently filming his role as the secretary in the Ghostbusters reboot. While he has made some risky moves, he has successfully broadened his appeal and his opportunities in Hollywood.

Ron Howard (Apollo 13, Willow) reunites with Hemsworth after a successful pairing in the racing biopic, Rush. They are bringing to life the true story that inspired the classic novel, Moby Dick. The story follows a team of whalers who encounter a sperm whale, that seems as though it has a personal vendetta out for the sailors. After a devastating attack, the surviving crew find themselves shipwrecked and struggling for life for three months at sea. (Check out our previous articles for more background on the story.) From the looks of the footage, Howard has made a Jaws movie for a new generation.

Another benefit of the film’s delayed release is that it allowed for Tom Holland (The Impossible) to transition from a miscellaneous kid actor, to a future superstar. He has nabbed the coveted role of Spider-Man in the time since the delay and even filmed his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War since then. Now there will be a curiosity factor that could affect the opening weekend. Holland is largely an unknown actor to the mainstream audience, but the hype for the new webbed face of Marvel will be in full-swing by December, with less than six months before the opening of Civil War. There are a lot of reasons to get excited for this movie, check out why below!

Official Synopsis:

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.  The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.  But that told only half the story.  “Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive.  Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

In the Heart of the Sea opens on December 11th, 2015.
