In 1996, audiences were treated to the throwback science-fiction film, Independence Day. The movie was directed by Roland Emmerich (2012) and was heavily influenced by B-movie invasion flicks from the 1950’s. The film benefited from revolutionary special effects at the time, which created unforgettable images of iconic monuments including the White House, being disintegrated by space invaders.
Independence Day was also bolstered by the emergence of a new superstar, Will Smith. Whose performance proved that he would be a box-office draw for decades to come. In the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, we see that the entire supporting cast from the first film has returned including, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Judd Hirsch, which highlights that there is clearly a talent vacuum at the center, with the absence of Smith.
In Independence Day: Resurgence, twenty years has passed since the events of the first movie, which have moved in real-time. Humans have taken the alien technology that was left behind from the War of 1996 and reverse engineered the weaponry, so this time the scales are more balanced. However, in true Emmerich fashion, the threat is larger and more spectacular than anything that Earth has seen before. The real question lies with whether or not the supporting cast of B-level talent, such as Liam Hemsworth and Vivica A. Fox, can really carry the franchise and how thirsty audiences are to see more disaster porn. We will find out next year. Enjoy the trailer.
