Jake Gyllenhaal has had an incredible acting career by managing to string together a series of quality projects. While he is respected by his peers and has turned in more than one dynamite performance, he never has had an iconic geek role to define him. He has been one breath away from being Batman, by coming in second to Christian Bale. He was even ready to shoot as Tobey Maguire’s replacement in Spider-Man 2, until Maguire’s injured back miraculously healed. So it’s easy for the antennae to pop up when you see him star in a film called, Nightcrawler. However this is no superhero tale, but a seedy character study into the dark underbelly of investigative journalism. Watch the trailer:

Gyllenhaal stars as Joe Bloom, a man down on his luck who happens to stumble upon the world of L.A.’s underground freelance reporting. The film looks to study the desperation of the American Dream, through Gyllenhaal’s chararacter as he enters a world of crime he is not ready for. It looks like an extremely intense experience. Look for it in theaters soon.

Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Zodiac), Rene Russo (Thor: The Dark World), Bill Paxton (Live. Die. Repeat, Agents of Shield) and is directed by the screenwriter of The Bourne Identity, Dan Gilroy.
