Just when you thought Johnny Depp had gotten his s**t together after winning back some of his audience with his grounded performance in Black Mass. He shows that he, once again, can’t resist letting out his more animated side on film. Depp has had an interesting career evolution going from teen heartthrob, to one of the most fearless young actors of his time, to a living cartoon in Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland. It was at this point that many began to tire of Depp’s acting crutches and wanted to see the more gritty performances that he gave in such films as Donnie Brasco.
Well, it looks like Depp isn’t done acting a fool in really bad looking films, because he is at it again in the new trailer for the sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass. Tim Burton (Batman, Beetlejuice) directed Alice in Wonderland to mixed reviews. However, the movie was a huge moneymaker for Disney. It went on to gross over one billion dollars at the box-office, so you do not have to be a mathematician to calculate why a sequel is coming down the pipeline.
The entire cast from Alice in Wonderland has returned including Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, as well as some new faces including Sacha Baron Cohen as Time. Burton has continued in a producing capacity, while handing the directing reigns over to James Bobin (The Muppets). It looks as if it has the same tone and feel as the first installment, which may actually be the issue. However, this is the franchise that solidified Disney’s new fascination with adapting its classic cartoon library into live-action films, such as the upcoming movie, The Jungle Book. So you might as well hold on for the ride, because there is a lot more to come. Enjoy the trailer.
