Kevin Hart has built a reputation as one of the busiest comedians in show business. Balancing both a hugely successful stand-up and acting career, while turning out movies at an impressive rate. Hart’s movies definitely have developed a formula, which has consistently produced profitable turnouts. A large part of the formula has to do with Hart being creatively paired with another acting or comedic force. Recently he has costarred with Josh Gad, Ice Cube, and Will Ferrell, and he continues his trend with the upcoming movie, Central Intelligence.
This time he has been paired with the biggest movie star that he has worked with yet, literally, in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The setup of the movie is relatively straight forward. Hart plays Calvin, an accountant who peaked in high school, while Johnson’s Bob, was an overweight outcast. Twenty years later the tables have turned and Bob is a CIA spy and Calvin gets involved in his action filled world. It’s clear within moments that this will be the standard oddball buddy comedy, with a strong dash of Twins physical humor. But that may be more than enough…
While the trailer does show some promise, it’s hard to tell if the movie will be simply a singular running gag, or if the movie is aspiring for a little more. The movie is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, whose last film We Are the Millers, was a surprisingly entertaining comedy. If he can use the same variety of humor and situations that he used in that film, while staying away from the obvious “Hart is short” jokes, this might be a fun ride. Enjoy the trailer.
Central Intelligence opens on June 17th, 2016.
