WATCH: Matt Damon Get Stranded in Space Again in THE MARTIAN Trailer

It seems that in the past few years there has been a subtle resurgence in science-fiction stories that deal with space exploration. Space, once regarded as the final frontier, had for the most part been replaced by stories of alien invasions and fantasy. However, in recent times we have gotten Prometheus, Gravity, and Interstellar, which has spoken to the renewed interest society has in finding out what lies out in the stars. Prolific director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator) has taken his cameras into the vast unknown and many are claiming that his next film, The Martian, is one to get excited about.

THE MARTIAN

Scott is adapting the best-selling novel, The Martian by Andy Weir, which tells the story of an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars. The astronaut, played by Matt Damon, is forced to improvise and concoct different methods of survival until his crew comes to rescue him years later. The book is frequently described as a cross between Castaway and Apollo 13 and certainly should be an acting showcase for Damon, whose character is faced with isolation and the harsh Martian environment. Despite the exterior similarities to Damon’s role in Interstellar, there are hopefully turns and twists which will differentiate it from Nolan’s film. Scott has also populated his cast with an amazing amount of talented actors which should ground this potentially realistic scenario. Enjoy the trailer.

Official Synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, “The Martian” features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

The Martian opens on November 25th, 2015.
