WATCH: Matt Damon Science the S**t Out of the New Trailer for THE MARTIAN

It is hard to not view The Martian as a sequel to other movies that came before it. Look no further than Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon, to see how this could be seen as another tale set in the world of Interstellar. However, fans of the book The Martian, written by Andy Weir, know that this is a very different story. It follows U.S. astronaut Mark Watney, who was stranded on Mars and thought for dead during an expedition. He finds himself completely alone on the barren planet, forced to survive for years while his colleagues launch a daring rescue mission.

Matt Damon is on the shortlist of actors who are skilled enough to keep an audience’s attention, by simply gardening, talking to himself, or by befriending a soccer ball. However, what distinguishes this movie from looking simply like Castaway in Space, is that we will see the rescue efforts on the other side as well. Which will surely become a cross-cutting race against time, by the climax. While it seems like Damon is giving an incredible performance on his own, his supporting cast is filled with actors that could be starring in their own movies, including Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, and Kristen Wiig. It is hard to fathom this collection of actors not coming up with a compelling film.

The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott, who is looking to take a realistic look at space exploration, before returning to the world of fantasy space travel in the upcoming Prometheus 2. Scott has had a string of misfires, including last year’s Exodus, however it looks as if this might be the perfect film to get people back on board. The science-fiction space movie is becoming a staple of the fall and early winter. With Interstellar last year and Gravity the year before that, both proving to be successful both financially and critically. Proving that audiences are eager for a heady space adventure in that time period. All signs are pointing towards this movie being something special. Take a look at the trailer.

Official Synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, “The Martian” features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

The Martian opens on October 2nd, 2015.
