WATCH: Michael Fassbender in the Mind-Blowing Trailer for ASSASSIN’S CREED

This is the year that video game to movie adaptations hope to finally get respect at the movie theaters. Next month’s release of Duncan Jones’ Warcraft is looking to grab people’s attention with orcs and goblins, however with movies such as Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li on the resume, the genre is in dire need of credibility. Enter Michael Fassbender.

The acclaimed actor jumped behind the adaptation of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, not only as the star but also as producer, which shows his commitment and belief in the project. He recruited Justin Kurzel, the director who he teamed up with for last year’s Macbeth, to tackle the big-budget adaptation of the wildly popular video game series. The young director has already shown an ability to go medieval on that a**, when it comes to his ability to shoot swords and sandals action, so the fit seems organic.

What should give fans a real source of optimism is the supporting cast that was assembled to bring the period picture to life. In addition to Fassbender in the lead role of Callum Lynch and his ancestor Aguilar, Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow), and Michael K. Williams (The Wire), also fill out the world of Assassin’s Creed. The film is not a direct adaptation of any of the games in the series. However, it does firmly exist in the same universe, as it’s another story happening concurrently with the adventures of Desmond Miles, the game’s primary antagonist. This should give the filmmakers, the ability to craft an original story in the Assassin’s Creed sandbox, while leaving room for new leads in sequels. After you watch this, it’s officially okay to get excited. Enjoy!

Official Synopsis:

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed opens on December 21st, 2016.
